Our first trip in the NT was a boat ride on Katherine Gorge. Due to high water levels we could not use the common boats but were placed in a speed boat. That way we saw 3x as much as on a usual tour - in less than half of the time. Swimming was not allowed due to strong currents and the potential presence of saltwater crocodiles. Usually this area is inhabited by freshies only but in the wet the natural borders are flooded. The boat driver had a lot of fun getting us wet in the currents between the gorges. We had a couple of intermediate stops to visit some villages along the way: Adelaide River - famous because of WWII and its war cemetary; Pine Creek: was once a rich mining town - now is more famous for its "pig and pussy hunt" |
